Half a year ago our beautiful baby girl was born and we have marveled at her development and discoveries as she grows bigger every day. This past week marked her six month birthday and we celebrated with buying rice cereal and spoons so baby can have her first swallow of big girl “food.”
A wonderful waitress (and fellow mom) in Washington told us something that really rang true: “The days are long, but the years are short.”
Now that six months have simply flashed by in the blink of an eye, I understand what she means. It both breaks my heart and makes me so very excited to see what comes next. I didn’t know it was possible to love like this, but every day with Maddy and Sean shows me new levels of gratitude for all the happiness they bring to my life.
Over the past month we’ve been traveling more than we were home, which wasn’t so great for Maddy’s sleep schedule, but man that little girl was a trooper! She slept almost all the way through a 5 hour flight to New York (I wish I could do that), she didn’t pitch a fit when we stayed in a 4th floor walk-up with little to no air conditioning during the hottest month on record in NYC, she napped and cooed her way through two days in the car as her dad and I road-tripped up to Washington to see my family, and she kept her happy disposition the whole time. I was absolutely bursting with pride as she got compliment after compliment on her plane etiquette and enthralled mommy’s coworkers with smiles and giggles for everyone. I just feel so incredibly lucky to be this incredible little human’s mommy (I wish I could take any credit, but in truth she gets her laid back attitude and smiles from her daddy).
About half way through the month we noticed that Madeline’s nose was running and she was gnawing on just about anything she could get her hands on. I’m pretty sure this marks the beginning of her teething…so much yikes. Goodbye sleep, I will miss you. Actually, we’ve been pretty lucky thus far. Maddy has fallen in love with her teething keys and a friend of ours recommended Hyland’s homeopathic teething tablets (which we’ve only had to use them a few times, but they’ve been a life saver for her when she’s in pain).
We also had Maddy’s 6 month appointment, which meant another round of shots. It’s heartbreaking taking my little girl in when I know she’s going to be in pain and confused and screaming. I just want to shield her from ever getting hurt and watching her little face crumble from smiles into devastation makes me cry like…well, like a baby. I love our pediatrician, but I hate taking her to the doctor.
Madeline’s 6 Month Milestones
- It’s only a matter of (tooth) time! Maddy is starting to teeth, which means she is grabbing and biting down as hard as she can. It’s fine for now because she doesn’t have any teeth yet, but I’m dreading the day she clamps down on my finger and draws blood!
- Hand eye coordination. Maddy is grabbing her bottles and guiding them into her mouth (along with anything else she can get ahold of).
- Inching along. Our little girl is already experimenting with crawling! She lays on her tummy, draws her legs up underneath her and pushes herself around. It’s both adorable and terrifying because I’m just now realizing that we still need to baby-proof our house.
- Bouncing baby! Maddy has fallen in love with her Fisher Price jumper and every day her legs get stronger as she bounces along to her favorite songs. In fact, if we stand her up, she’ll lock her legs and hold herself up for minutes at a time.
